THE ITALIAN fashion house Amore yesterday unveiled plans for its latest Mia Famiglia collection. The designs were immediately hailed by industry pundits as the most innovative and exciting of the decade.
The range has been made for children but the team of designers, led by an English executive, are now working on adult versions.
Star of the collection is the newly developed diagnostic fabric by manufacturers Le Neuf. It acts as a kind of barometer of a child's health and is also useful for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Within seconds of a flare-up, the garment turns a deep red, indicating that medication is required. The colour of the fabric lightens as the condition improves.
Jason Masterton-Copley, chief designer for Mia Famiglia, said: "I came up with the concept of using a fabric such as this when I was a young designer at the Royal College of Art in London more than 40 years ago, never expecting to see it actually happen."
Parents, child rights groups and health experts welcomed the range, which is expected to keep down health insurance premiums. But the collection does not come cheap. Clothes for children aged two to four years start at E$800.
